Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is becoming very popular in America, but some people still don’t know what it is. Here is a crash course on what you can expect from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art similar to Judo and wrestling. Jiu-Jitsu translates as “the soft art” because it is not a form of punching and kicking, but rather teaches throws, submission techniques, escapes, counters, recounters, and much more.
How effective is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a martial art form? Watch some mixed martial arts, such as UFC, Strikeforce, or WEC and you are sure to see someone using BJJ. Those men wage personal combat for a living and many of them specialize in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art, not, strictly speaking, a form of exercise. It should not be your primary form of exercise, but most places which teach BJJ also offer fitness classes which will help you to get in shape and stay in shape.
In addition to exercise, it is also a good idea to start stretching on a regular basis. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a complex form which will use every muscle in your body and require more agility than you probably are used to using.
You can expect to be learning new things for as long as you study Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. With the wide range of tools which BJJ uses, it would take decades for you to become bored with the art.
Perhaps the most important thing to keep in mind is that you need to leave your ego at the door. You will be training with martial artists and other students who have been doing this longer than you have. They will certainly teach you things you never expected to be taught.
Just remember, arrogance is what you think can do. Confidence is what you know you can do. Replacing arrogance with confidence is something everyone should strive for and is one of the goals of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
